My favourite moments from The Dandies’ Toronto ComiCon Star Trek improv, Harry Potter improv, and Star Wars improv

By Josh Henderson

Two weekends ago, The Dandies hit Toronto ComiCon with our Star Trek improv, Harry Potter improv, and Star Wars improv shows. As The Dandies media guru, I had the joy of seeing these shows from off-stage. While I have a lot to focus on during performances, I do have moments where I get to experience funny, poignant, or silly moments in a similar way to an audience member. Here are five of my favourite moments from The Dandies Toronto ComiCon shows.

My favourite moments from The Dandies Toronto ComiCon Star Trek improv, Harry Potter improv, and Star Wars improv

1. Death Star Follies – Porg Force powers

The Dandies Star Wars improv show, Death Star Follies featured a Force battle between up-and-coming Jedi, Bae and… a porg. Oh and they were competing over getting the highest number on a twenty-sided die. It was cute and silly and fun – plus a completely geeky geek comedy moment. Who wouldn’t love that?

2. Holodeck Follies – The cephalopod Supreme Leader

The crew of the USS Pelican boldly went to a planet that adored twenty-first century earth. While that opened the door to a lot of funny Instagram and millennial jokes, what made the planet for me was the family of cephalopods who were experts on human culture and so became the Supreme Leaders… and then calamari.

3. Hogwarts Follies – The Slush Monster family

Food seems to be a common theme for me in my favourite moments from The Dandies’ shows for Toronto ComiCon… Hmmm… Was I hungry?… Am I ever not hungry? Either way, my enjoyment of food comedy made this ComiCon’s Harry Potter improv spoof show perfect for me! Not only was there the Cheeseley family and cheesy curling, but there was a family of Slush Monsters! The moment with the Slush Monster family and when Don Cheeseley stopped using the word “Monster” because Slushie was a person were the perfect blend of silly and sweet syrupy!

4. Death Star Follies – A poetry battle

Who needs lightsabers when you have haikus? Watching Bae and Crylo Ben have a legitimate, fully improvised haiku-off was funny and masterful. There is something that always wows about an improvised song or poem – and this show had poems and haikus galore with jokes in them!

5. Holodeck Follies – New uniforms

This year, The Dandies launched new uniforms for our Star Trek improv show, Holodeck Follies and they look amazing! If you missed them, don’t worry, they’ll be returning at The Dandies monthly Holodeck Follies show!
