This weekend, The Dandies did our last Star Trek improv show for the year. Before we scatter for the holidays (don’t worry – we’ll keep our blogs coming!), we got together to catch up and reminisce about some of our favourite moments from our Star Trek improv, Harry Potter improv, Star Wars improv, Buffy the Vampire Slayer improv, and Supernatural improv shows. We didn’t want to leave you out, so here are just a few of our 2018 highlights!
Star Trek improv, Harry Potter improv, Star Wars improv, Buffy the Vampire Slayer improv, and Supernatural improv – oh my!
1. Fan Expo Canada
Fan Expo Canada is always a highlight for us. It’s one of the first cons we ever performed at and it’s around the corner (figuratively) for many of us, so it always feels like coming home.
Depending on the day(s) they came, attendees this year were able to catch our Star Trek improv, Harry Potter improv, Star Wars improv, and/or Supernatural improv shows at the con. As always, we loved connecting with audience members who are passionate viewers of our source material, as well as more casual viewers looking for a laugh (and a chance to rest their weary feet)!
2. Festival of Wizardry
While we enjoy playing our home city, we also love hitting the road for conventions and festivals. One of the trips we got to take this year was to Blyth’s Festival of Wizardry! The festival was incredible – and it was a pleasure to go on right after Bonnie Wright on the final day of the event.
A major highlight for us was how much our audiences embraced their characters. We even got citations from a Dolores Umbridge!
3. Many, many brunches
While you mostly see us onstage, we actually spend a lot of time together offstage too. In fact, one of the great things about The Dandies is that we are like our own little family. That’s why, in addition to performances, rehearsals, and meetings, we try to get together for brunch every month. That gives us a chance to catch up, share new shows or movies we’re enjoying, and just chow down of some great food!
4. Toronto ComiCon
Toronto ComiCon is another one of our conventions that feels like home. Like with Fan Expo, we have audience members who have been attending our shows for years, so there’s a bit of a reunion feel when we arrive.
We also enjoy seeing the incredible variety of cosplay outfits. There’s nothing quite like looking out at a crowd for one of our greek improv shows and seeing every fandom we know – and many more – represented.
5. Our sixth anniversary Holodeck Follies show
Every show is special for us. As one of the long-running shows in Toronto, we are so grateful to have audience members coming out to our shows for the last six years!
Our anniversary shows always hold a special place in our heart though. Continuing our Social Capital Theatre tradition, Comedy Bar made a special drink for the show (a super strong Romulan Ale!). This year, we loved sharing our anniversary stage with our amazing host Hisham Kelati; our incredible guest stand-up, Ashley Cooper; and Guy Guyson himself – Alan Leightizer!
Thank-you for a wonderful year! We wish you and your loved ones the best this holiday season!
