The holidays are on their way, bringing good food, great people, and amazing times along with them! But the holidays can also be the perfect time to indulge in all your nerdy and geeky passions. That’s why, today, I want to take some time to talk about how to bring some nerdy fun (including some geek improv) to your holiday season.
Five ways to bring some nerdy fun and geek improv to your holiday season
1. Game night
Whether you’re into tabletop role-playing games, Magic: The Gathering, video games, or just good, old-fashioned board games, the holidays are ideal for a game night with your friends! If you don’t want to host, consider going to a gaming cafe. This way, your guests can order what they want, you’ll have all the space you need, and you don’t have to worry about cleaning up.
2. Movie and show marathons
Traditionally, the holidays have been a time for geeky marathons from fan favourite Star Trek episodes to all the Star Wars movies to the James Bond series. So I say, “embrace the marathon!” Choose your favourite fandom and enjoy a full day of hanging out in that universe. I always go for The Lord of the Rings. Every year, I turn off my computer and phone for a marathon of the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings movies.
3. Catching up on something you’ve been desperate to see, read, listen to, or attend
It’s hard to stay on top of all the awesome geek offerings that come out over the course of the year. So if you’re anything like me, the holidays are a chance to finally watch the series you’ve been looking forward to, read the book you’ve never finished, listen to the podcast you’ve heard exciting reviews of, or check out an event you’ve been waiting for. Depending on what you want to catch up on, this can be the way to carve out some alone time or to hang out with fellow nerds and geeks.
4. A geeky gift exchange
If you have a circle of nerdy or geeky friends, you may want to organize a gift exchange. Don’t want to buy for everyone? Draw names so everyone gives a gift to someone else or do a grab bag where everyone puts a present in and then everyone gets to draw one out. In addition to exchanging geeky or nerdy gifts, you may want to consider adding other parameters like a price limit or having all the gifts be homemade.
5. Have a laugh with some geek improv
The holidays can be stressful, so don’t forget to make some time to laugh. What better way to do that than to check out some geek improv! The Dandies have our sixth anniversary show coming up on December 8th, as well as our Holodeck Follies show on January 12th. If you really need a laugh, start and end your holiday season with us!
Remember to sprinkle a little geek improv through the rest of your holidays
Geek improv is all about having fun and connecting with others over a shared bond. The holidays are the time to bring these ideas out into your other relationships. Whether your bond is a passion for the same fandom or growing up in the same family or even just waiting for the same bus, take time to share and have fun with those around you.
