CBS Studios announced a new Star Trek franchise will hit the small screen (television and subscription streaming) in January 2017.

I hope CBS doesn’t whitewash the future (through Hollywood standard casting decisions) especially given their interest in interesting new civilizations and addressing social issues. I also hope the aliens move beyond interesting nose-pieces.

What do you think the new ship class will be able to do? Other scifi shows have moved beyond the visual warp effects so this new show will have to come up with something if it wants to stay current.

Pretending the old casts were not available, who would you cast as Captain? Idris Elba?
